The bonding hormone

The chemistry of staying close.

Mammal pair bonding is one of the clearer chapters in behavioral science. A lot of people want to stay together. Oxytocin is the hormone that research keeps finding in that story: closeness, trust, and touch.

The short version

Oxytocin is a hormone the body makes, often called the bonding hormone because of what research has found in pair-bonding mammals and in human studies of closeness, trust, and touch.

Couples who want to stay close can each ask a licensed physician whether a compounded form is appropriate. That is a question about care. It is not a promise about a relationship.

Couples

Start together.

Both partners can begin. Each person completes a separate intake, and each intake gets its own clinical review. One partner’s answers are not the other partner’s visit.

The research

What the studies actually explored

The findings below describe research. They do not describe what a VevaMD product will do for a couple.

01 — Mammals

Pair bonding, in the animal that formed the science

Prairie voles form a preference for one partner. In female prairie voles, oxytocin delivered into the brain facilitated that preference after a few hours with a male. Oxytocin given under the skin did not. A drug that blocks the oxytocin receptor prevented the preference. A second experiment found that oxytocin, not vasopressin, was the peptide tied to the female’s preference, while earlier work in males of the same species pointed to vasopressin. A 2004 review put the pieces in one model: oxytocin helps the brain recognize a specific partner, and dopamine marks that partner as rewarding. The authors called the implications for people intriguing. They did not test a human medicine.

02 — Couples

Communication, distance, and trust in people

In a laboratory, 47 heterosexual couples used an intranasal oxytocin spray or a placebo before a conflict conversation. The oxytocin group showed more positive communication relative to negative communication, and lower cortisol afterward. The total time spent in positive behavior, and the total time spent in negative behavior, did not change. In a separate study, intranasal oxytocin led men who were already in a monogamous relationship to keep about 10 to 15 centimeters more distance from an attractive woman. Single men did not show that change.

Evidence for oxytocin in sexual health is limited. These papers are not trials of a dissolving strip, a troche, a gummy, or a compounded nasal spray. Compounded oxytocin is not FDA-approved for this use. Read the science.

The catalog

Four forms. Plainly described.

These are the oxytocin formats in the catalog. Your physician chooses what, if anything, fits your history. This page states no dose and no per-product price.

01

Oxytocin dissolving strip

Dissolves on the tongue.

Offered on the men’s intake and the women’s intake.

02

Tadalafil + oxytocin troche

Dissolves in the cheek.

Men’s intake only. Tadalafil is not safe with nitrates or poppers.

03

PT-141 + oxytocin gummy

A premium chewable.

Offered on the men’s intake and the women’s intake. This is not the FDA-approved Vyleesi product.

04

Oxytocin nasal spray

A premium nasal spray.

Offered on the men’s intake and the women’s intake.

The path

What happens after you start

  1. 01

    Your own intake

Men open the men’s sexual health intake. Women open the women’s sexual health intake. Health history and current medicines are part of it.

  2. 02

    A physician reviews it

A board-certified, US-licensed physician reviews that intake. VevaMD does not examine you and does not prescribe.

  3. 03

    A pharmacy ships, if prescribed

If the physician decides a prescription is appropriate, a state-licensed U.S. pharmacy prepares it and ships it.

  4. 04

    Care continues

Follow-up is what the physician sets. You can cancel. Nothing here is a course you are locked into.

Before you start

Safety, and who it is not for

  • Compounded oxytocin is not FDA-approved. The FDA-approved oxytocin injection is a hospital drug for medically indicated labor and for contraction of the uterus after birth. That approval does not cover these compounded products, and it does not cover closeness or sexual health.
  • Limited data exist on the safety and effectiveness of oxytocin for sexual health. A standard dose for this use has not been established.
  • Listed effects of oxytocin include mild headache, nausea, a temporary change in blood pressure, and a change in mood.
  • Do not start if your blood pressure is poorly controlled or you have known heart disease.
  • The tadalafil combination is not for you if you take nitrates for chest pain, use poppers, have severe heart or liver problems, have very low blood pressure, or had a recent stroke or heart attack.
  • The gummy also contains PT-141 (bremelanotide). The FDA-approved bremelanotide product lists nausea as its most common side effect. A compounded gummy is not that product.
  • Tell the physician every medicine you take, and any allergy to a component. Tell them if you are pregnant or might be. The approved form of this hormone is used to contract the uterus.
  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, extreme dizziness, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat is an emergency. Call 911.
  • Counseling and relationship therapy are alternatives named in the clinical consent. An online intake does not replace them, and it does not replace an in-person exam when you need one.

Questions

Common questions

What is oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a hormone the body makes. Researchers study it because it is involved in closeness, trust, and touch, including the pair bonds of some mammals. People often call it the bonding hormone because of that research.

Why are couples asking about it?

A lot of people want to stay close for the long haul. Pair-bonding research, and human studies of communication and touch, are why oxytocin is part of that conversation. Wanting to stay together is not the same as a promise that a medicine will do it.

Will a compounded product keep two people together?

No. The studies on this page explored oxytocin in animals or in a laboratory. They are not evidence that a strip, troche, gummy, or spray will change a given relationship. A licensed physician may also decide a prescription is not appropriate.

Which oxytocin formats can a physician consider?

The catalog has an oxytocin dissolving strip, a tadalafil plus oxytocin troche for men, a PT-141 plus oxytocin gummy, and an oxytocin nasal spray. Your physician chooses, and may choose none. This page does not give a dose.

Can my partner and I start together?

Yes. Each of you opens your own intake. Men use the men’s sexual health intake. Women use the women’s sexual health intake. Each intake gets its own clinical review.

Who decides whether anything is prescribed?

A board-certified, US-licensed physician. VevaMD is a technology company, not a medical provider, and does not prescribe. A prescription is never guaranteed.

What should I know before I start?

Compounded oxytocin is not FDA-approved for closeness or sexual health. Headache, nausea, a temporary change in blood pressure, and a change in mood are listed effects. People with poorly controlled blood pressure or known heart disease should not start. The tadalafil combination is not for nitrates, poppers, severe heart or liver problems, very low blood pressure, or a recent stroke or heart attack.

Where is the price?

The public price is the starting price at the top of this page. The exact price for the product a physician prescribes is shown before you pay. There is no per-product price on this page.
