Is compounded GLP-1 medication safe? What the FDA says.
Compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. A compounded drug is prepared by a pharmacy for one patient after a prescription.
FDA: Concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs used for weight lossThe FDA has warned telehealth companies about how they market them. Since 2025 the FDA has sent warning letters to telehealth companies for calling compounded GLP-1s "generic," "the same as" a brand or "FDA-approved," for borrowing brand trial results, and for saying they come from an "FDA-approved pharmacy." VevaMD says none of those things, and this page is written so it never will.
FDA warns 30 telehealth companies against illegal marketing of compounded GLP-1sWho can still compound them. The national shortages of semaglutide and tirzepatide ended in 2025. In 2026 the FDA proposed stopping large outsourcing facilities (503B) from compounding them from bulk ingredients. State-licensed 503A pharmacies, which prepare a medication for one patient's prescription, are not covered by that proposal. VevaMD's compounded GLP-1s come from 503A pharmacies.

VevaMD does not create that account.
